The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has praised Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, for significantly improving the security situation in the state ahead of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
The commendation was given by INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during the second quarterly consultative meeting with political parties held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Yakubu described the current atmosphere in Anambra as “calm and peaceful,” a notable shift from the tense security climate that hampered preparations for the 2021 gubernatorial poll.
“We praised Governor Soludo for this achievement and urged him to sustain the current security tempo and safeguard the security architecture in place to ensure a smooth, free, fair, and credible electoral process,” Yakubu stated.
He recalled that during the 2021 election cycle, INEC facilities were repeatedly targeted in violent attacks. The state headquarters in Awka was partially burned, Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines were destroyed, and several local government offices were set ablaze. Staff members also suffered injuries during the unrest.
In light of these challenges, the INEC Chairman stressed the need to maintain the improved security conditions and avoid a repeat of the past.
Yakubu reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders in delivering a credible election and called for continuous support to sustain peace in the lead-up to the polls.
He also highlighted INEC’s commitment to transparency and inclusiveness throughout the electoral process, noting that effective security remains a key component in building voter confidence and ensuring full participation.
