INEC Chairman Under Attack Over Comments On Ghana Presidential Election

The Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have voiced strong disapproval of comments made by the Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu.

Yakubu had praised Ghana’s recent presidential election, citing it as an example of peaceful and credible voting.

His remarks came after Ghana’s opposition candidate, John Mahama, defeated the ruling party’s candidate, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Yakubu’s acknowledgment of the smooth process in Ghana drew sharp reactions from Nigerian opposition parties.

The LP and PDP accused Yakubu of mismanaging Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election, where Bola Tinubu emerged as the winner amid allegations of irregularities and technical failures.

Both Peter Obi of the LP and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, who lost in court appeals, have consistently maintained that the election lacked transparency.

The PDP called Yakubu’s involvement in Ghana’s election ironic, suggesting he should instead reflect on his role in Nigeria’s challenges.

Similarly, the LP criticized him for comparing Nigeria to Ghana, emphasizing that the latter’s election was free of violence and technical issues.

Both parties insisted that Yakubu should apologize to Nigerians for what they described as a poorly conducted election.
