Independence Bridge Reopened After Traffic Chaos in Lagos

The federal government has ordered the reopening of the Independence Bridge on Victoria Island, Lagos, following hours of heavy traffic congestion caused by its closure.

The bridge, which was shut down for maintenance on Monday, was expected to remain closed until the end of May.

The closure, which affected major routes including Ahmadu Bello Way, Adeola Odeku, Marina, Eko Bridge, and Onikan, led to severe gridlock, leaving many motorists stranded for hours.

Responding to the situation, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, directed that the bridge be reopened immediately.

Authorities confirmed that while full repairs will take place later, temporary fixes are being carried out to ensure the bridge remains usable.

The minister acknowledged the difficulties caused by the closure and called on road users to remain patient as efforts continue to improve infrastructure.
