Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has revealed plans to take legal steps over his arrest and detention in December 2024.
He was picked up by the police in Lagos and moved to Ekiti State after a defamation case was filed against him by senior lawyer Afe Babalola.
The case was based on comments Farotimi made in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
A magistrate court later ordered that he be kept in custody for 21 days.
Although Babalola eventually withdrew the defamation case, Farotimi has made it clear he is not ready to drop the matter.
He said his arrest was an unfair use of state power to settle what should have been a private legal issue.
Farotimi insisted that even though the criminal case has ended, the issue of his detention remains and must be addressed in court.
He stated that his legal team will decide who to sue, whether it is the police who arrested him, the magistrate who remanded him, or those who filed the petition that led to his arrest.
Farotimi is determined to make sure those responsible for his detention are held accountable and plans to handle the matter through the courts.
