The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said his political career would be destroyed if Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, secures a second term in office.
Wike made the statement during a stakeholders’ meeting in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he said a firm decision had already been taken against Fubara’s re-election bid. According to him, supporting Fubara again would amount to repeating a costly political mistake.
He said he would not allow himself and his political allies to be “buried politically,” stressing that the choice concerning Rivers politics and President Bola Tinubu had already been settled. Wike insisted that there was no chance of backing Fubara for another term.
The former Rivers governor renewed his attacks on Fubara after the governor defected to the All Progressives Congress. He accused Fubara of violating the peace agreement that led to the lifting of emergency rule in the state and allowed him to return to office.
Wike also said the leadership mistake made in Rivers would be corrected in the next election cycle, adding that supporting President Tinubu would not guarantee Fubara’s re-election. He claimed that Fubara lacked proper relationships with key political actors and maintained that he personally made Fubara governor despite his limited popularity.
