Former President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his stance on maintaining integrity while in office, asserting that he did not amass wealth through corrupt means during his presidency. He described Nigeria as a challenging nation to govern due to its complexities.
Buhari, speaking in Hausa, made these remarks during an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting at the Presidential Banquet Hall, Government House, Katsina State, ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
Highlighting his modest lifestyle, the former president disclosed that he relies on income generated from renting out one of his two houses in Kaduna State for sustenance. He urged leaders to embrace transparency and accountability as essential principles of governance.
He further stated that he owns only three houses located in Daura, Katsina State, and Kaduna State, emphasising that his financial conduct during his tenure remains untainted by any form of corruption.
Buhari lamented the lack of awareness among Nigerians about the complexities involved in running the country. According to him, leadership in Nigeria is often misunderstood, with citizens quick to criticise their leaders both during and after their tenures.
“Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians are unaware. You will not understand the complexities of leadership and the country itself until you find yourself in the administrative position of the country,” he said.
The former president remarked on his improved health and appearance since leaving office, stating, “I look much better and healthier now than when I was the president of the country. Anybody that sees me now acknowledges that I look better than before.”
Reflecting on his life post-presidency, Buhari said, “After my eight years as a civil president, I have only three houses; one in Daura and two in Kaduna. I have given one out for renting where I get money for feeding.”
