President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has received a plea to address the issues concerning the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) through political and diplomatic channels.
This request was made by the House of Representatives on Thursday, July 6, with the aim of resolving the ongoing security challenges in the South East region of the nation.
The House also called on the government to engage in consultations with political, traditional, and religious leaders from Ebonyi State and the South East to find a lasting solution to the problem. This appeal came after a motion was presented by Hon. Eze Nwachukwu from Ebonyi State, who sought to put an end to the killings occurring in the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu federal constituency.
During the motion, Hon. Nwachukwu highlighted that unidentified gunmen had recently killed two individuals in a market in Ebonyi LGA on July 4, resulting in several others being injured. Market leaders had expressed their concerns and requested improved security measures in the area. Unfortunately, the security agencies had not taken sufficient action to prevent further loss of life.
On a different note, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the representative for Isiala Ngwa North federal constituency of Abia State, appealed to President Tinubu for the release of IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Onwusibe urged the House to intervene and persuade President Tinubu to secure Kanu’s release, believing that this action would help bring an end to the killings in the South-East geopolitical zone.
While discussing this matter, the deputy majority leader, Hon. Abdullahi Halims, cautioned the House against getting involved, as the issue was currently under legal consideration. However, the deputy speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, disagreed with the lawmaker, stating that Onwusibe’s proposal aimed to find a peaceful resolution for Kanu’s release.
