Historic Victory: Nigeria Edges Out New Zealand for First U-19 Women’s World Cup Win

In a thrilling encounter at the 2025 ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia, Nigeria’s Junior Female Yellow Greens made a remarkable debut, securing their first-ever win with a narrow two-run victory over test-playing nation New Zealand on Monday.

After facing delays due to rain in Sarawak, the Nigerian team refused to let the weather dampen their spirits. The match commenced over two hours later than scheduled, with overs reduced, but the Junior Yellow Greens were determined to shine.

New Zealand chose to field first, putting the onus on Nigeria’s batters. Captain Lucky Piety led from the front, striking the team’s first six at a Women’s World Cup, anchoring the innings as Nigeria posted a total of 65 runs, losing six wickets in just 13 overs.

With a modest target set, the Nigerian bowlers took to the field with focus and poise. Under the leadership of Sarah Bakhita, the team kept their composure, successfully restricting the fourth-ranked New Zealand team to 63 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Starnews NG reports that the victory did not only mark a significant milestone for Nigerian women’s cricket but also sets an encouraging tone for their campaign in the tournament.
