Over 200 police officers surrounded the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja on Thursday as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was scheduled to appear in court over alleged defamation.
The police, equipped with rifles and anti-riot gear, arrived early to maintain peace and prevent any unrest around the court premises.
Their presence was noticeable both inside and outside the courtroom.
The senator is facing a three-count charge brought by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
She is accused of making damaging statements against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
Although Senator Natasha had not arrived by the time the report was filed, her supporters were already present in large numbers.
Among them was Oby Ezekwesili, a former education minister, who came with human rights activists to show support.
The courtroom was also filled with political allies of Yahaya Bello, reflecting the strong political interest in the matter.
Senator Natasha’s legal team is expected to be led by Roland Otaru, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as the trial unfolds.
