Suspected Fulani militias have killed a female vigilante leader, identified as Tawa, and three others in separate attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attacks, which occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday in Butura district, also left two persons injured.
Confirming the incidents to journalists on Thursday, the President of the Butura Youth Movement (BYM), Sabastine Magit, described the killings as “barbaric and senseless.”
According to him, the first ambush took place near Maikatako village, where two male vigilante volunteers were shot dead and another sustained injuries. A day later, near Butura Kampani village, gunmen opened fire on Tawa while she was returning from a mining camp where she had volunteered to assist security forces in safeguarding tin miners. She was killed alongside another woman traveling with her on a motorcycle, while the rider was left wounded.
“In the past 24 hours, four of our members, including a dedicated female vigilante leader, have been murdered in separate incidents,” Magit said.
He accused Fulani herders of orchestrating the attacks and questioned why security agencies failed to act on intelligence about the planned assaults. He lamented that the negligence had emboldened criminal groups to continue targeting communities in Bokkos.
Magit urged authorities to step up patrols and surveillance in vulnerable areas, stressing that the repeated violence was weakening local efforts to defend communities from banditry and terrorism.
The killings add to the growing spate of attacks in Plateau State, where rural communities have continued to suffer casualties despite ongoing military operations.
