Gov. Otti Plans to Repurpose Government House Into Luxury Hotel

The Abia State government has revealed plans to transform the controversial Government House, originally commissioned by the previous administration, into a luxury five-star hotel, citing safety concerns and significant structural issues.

During an inspection tour, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, shared that the facility, which was inaugurated just one day before the previous administration left office, lacked essential amenities and posed considerable security risks due to its location in a residential area.

Kanu criticized the building’s design, stating that only the first floor had been completed and furnished, while the upper floors remained unfinished and were plagued with structural defects. He pointed out that despite the large sum of public funds invested, critical features such as a functional elevator were not included in the building.

Kanu also addressed allegations made by the former Information Commissioner, John Okiyi Kalu, who claimed that Governor Alex Otti’s administration was spreading false information about the previous government. Kanu firmly rejected these accusations, stating that the structure was unfit for use as an official residence.

“This building cannot serve as a secure residence for a sitting governor. Converting it into a hotel is the most reasonable solution,” Kanu stated, urging the public to disregard claims that the building had been completed.
