Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, is facing early criticism just two weeks into his tenure following mixed messages regarding the status of the Edo State Security Network, raising concerns about the administration’s readiness and coordination.
On Friday, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, announced the lifting of a suspension on the security outfit imposed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) ahead of the September 21 governorship election. However, it was later clarified that the suspension had already been lifted by former Governor Godwin Obaseki on October 7 during a security council meeting.
This confusion has drawn criticism from opposition figures, including Barrister Anthony Ehilebo, a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who described the misstep as indicative of poor preparation. Security experts also cautioned that the administration needs to focus on addressing the escalating insecurity in the state.
Bright Amadi, a security consultant based in Benin, stated, “Clarifying the status of the state security network should have been a top priority, especially given the growing security concerns.”
Ehilebo further accused the Okpebholo administration of politicizing security issues, referencing the previous criticism of the security outfit as former Governor Obaseki’s “private army” during the election campaign. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s approach, saying, “Instead of focusing on governance, they are distracted by photo opportunities and political games.”
With concerns mounting, analysts stress the need for clear communication and strategic planning to address the state’s security challenges, urging the new government to prioritize security and governance over political missteps.
