The Ghanaian government has announced plans to investigate the death of Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju, who passed away during a fight in Accra.
Kofi Adams, Ghana’s minister for sports and recreation, stated that a committee will be set up to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Olanrewaju collapsed in the third round of a match against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu on March 29.
The fight took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League.
Medical personnel rushed him to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Following the tragedy, the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) raised concerns about possible negligence, accusing the Ghana Boxing Authority of failing to follow standard procedures before organizing the bout.
The secretary-general of the NBB of C, Remi Aboderin, criticized the lack of adherence to safety regulations and called for accountability.
In response, Ghana’s sports minister assured the public that a thorough probe will be conducted.
He emphasized that no details will be overlooked and urged both Nigerian and Ghanaian boxing authorities to cooperate with the investigation.
According to Adams, the committee will review whether all necessary protocols, including medical and ringside safety measures, were followed before and during the fight.
Olanrewaju was a former West African and Nigerian light-heavyweight champion. Throughout his career, he fought 24 matches, securing 13 wins, eight losses, and three draws.
