The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has stated that Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina is still the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, even though he started a six-month leave on April 14, 2025.
The school explained that his absence is not a suspension or removal, but a period of accumulated annual and research leave approved by the governing council.
According to the university, the leave was part of his entitlements.
Prof. Fasina had initially applied for 288 days, but the governing council granted him 126 days.
During this time, the most senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olubunmi Samuel Shittu, will temporarily handle administrative responsibilities until Fasina returns.
The school pointed out that this is only a temporary arrangement and does not mean Prof. Shittu has taken over as the new Vice-Chancellor.
FUOYE also reacted to reports from some media outlets suggesting that Fasina had been suspended over a sexual harassment case.
The university described those reports as false and aimed at misleading the public.
It specifically mentioned Sahara Reporters, accusing it of twisting facts and spreading damaging claims.
The school insisted that Fasina is still in office and will continue as Vice-Chancellor until his tenure ends in February 2026.
It also warned that legal action may be taken against media platforms that continue to spread what it called fake information.
FUOYE asked members of the public to ignore the rumours and assured them that academic and administrative work will go on smoothly during the VC’s leave.
