Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has earned international recognition after being listed among The Hollywood Reporter’s “Most Influential Women in International Film,” a global honour celebrating 46 outstanding women shaping the film industry worldwide.
Akindele shared her excitement on Instagram, describing the recognition as a moment of gratitude and inspiration. She said the honour reinforces her commitment to storytelling and lifting others in the creative space.
“To be recognised among 46 powerful, visionary women from around the world is more than a moment of celebration—it’s a call to keep building, creating boldly, and lifting others as we rise,” she wrote.
The announcement, made on Friday, May 9, highlights Akindele’s rising global stature, built on her impressive body of work in Nollywood. With blockbuster films like Omo Ghetto: The Saga and A Tribe Called Judah, along with the popular TV series Jenifa’s Diary, she has established herself as a leading voice in African cinema.
Akindele also used the occasion to celebrate fellow honoree and Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu. She described Abudu as a mentor and driving force in the growth of Nigeria’s creative industry.
“Congratulations to Aunty Mo @moabudu. It’s an honour to be featured alongside someone who has inspired so many of us. Thank you for your invaluable contributions to the creative space,” she added.
The recognition reinforces Funke Akindele’s role as not just a filmmaker, but as a cultural icon and trailblazer in the international entertainment landscape.
