Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has refuted claims by former Head of Service, George Nwaeke, that he authorized attacks on the Rivers State House of Assembly and oil pipelines.
In a statement, Fubara dismissed the allegations, insisting that such incidents never occurred under his leadership. He described Nwaeke’s claims as baseless and aimed at misleading the public.
“My attention has been drawn to a press briefing by Dr. George Nwaeke, aired on Channels Television on March 28, 2025. Ordinarily, I would not respond to such claims, but it is important to correct any wrong impressions they may create,” he stated.
He also addressed Nwaeke’s assertion that he backed Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s alleged 2027 presidential ambition, calling the claim ridiculous.
“It is laughable to suggest that Dr. Nwaeke, as Head of Service, would be involved in high-level political meetings, let alone attend supposed night meetings with Bala Mohammed and militants. No such meetings ever took place,” Fubara said.
He explained that Mohammed’s visit to Rivers State was widely known and was conducted in his role as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum.
Rejecting accusations of collaborating with militants to sabotage national infrastructure, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining peace in the state.
“It is absurd to claim that I encouraged attacks on oil pipelines or any national assets. At no time did I meet with militants or any criminal group to destabilize the state. I have consistently advocated for peace, even in the face of provocation,” he added.
Fubara alleged that Nwaeke had been compromised and was acting under external influence.
“The reality is that Dr. Nwaeke has been coerced or incentivized to make these false statements against me. His claims are nothing but an attempt to serve the interests of those seeking to undermine my administration,” he asserted.
He urged the people of Rivers State and Nigerians to disregard the allegations, describing them as a smear campaign intended to derail the peace process initiated by President Bola Tinubu.
