The Anambra State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recovered a vehicle reported stolen three years ago, in what has been described as a major breakthrough made possible through its National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS).
The vehicle was recovered at the NVIS Desk Office located at Nteje, in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, during a routine verification process. According to the Sector Public Education Officer, RC Margaret Onabe, the discovery was made when an agent from the State Board of Internal Revenue presented documents of the said vehicle for verification at the FRSC office.
Onabe explained that upon entering the vehicle’s information into the NVIS database, the system immediately flagged it as a stolen asset, which had been listed as missing since 2022. This prompted the officers on duty to initiate immediate action to trace the rightful owner.
“After the red alert from the database, we contacted the registered owner using the information on the system. The woman confirmed that the vehicle was indeed hers and that it had been stolen three years ago. She also presented the original documents to back her claim,” Onabe said.
Following the confirmation, the matter was swiftly escalated to the Anambra State Police Command, which took custody of the vehicle to commence further investigation into the circumstances surrounding its disappearance and recovery.
Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Joyce Alexander, praised the effectiveness of the NVIS system, describing the incident as a demonstration of how data-driven technology can assist in curbing motor-related crimes.
“This is a testament to the efficiency of the NVIS platform. It is a powerful tool that helps in identifying stolen vehicles and supports security agencies in their recovery efforts,” she said.
Commander Alexander urged all vehicle owners to ensure that their vehicle registration details, particularly number plates, are properly documented and uploaded on the NVIS platform. According to her, such compliance greatly enhances the chances of recovering stolen vehicles and ensures road safety.
She also commended the synergy between FRSC officers, the Board of Internal Revenue, and the Nigeria Police Force, describing the collaboration as a key factor in the success of the recovery.
“The FRSC remains committed to leveraging technology and building inter-agency partnerships to promote safety, security, and justice on our roads,” Alexander stated.
The recovered vehicle has been handed over to the police while investigations continue.
