The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has apprehended 7,798 individuals in the last two months for offenses related to fake vehicle number plates.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, revealed this during a meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC in Abuja on Wednesday.
The meeting was convened to address rising concerns over the widespread use of counterfeit number plates, which pose a serious threat to public safety and security.
In a statement released by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed stressed the importance of legislative backing to strengthen efforts against this illegal activity.
Despite facing resistance from vehicle owners using fraudulent plates, he noted that the FRSC had intensified its crackdown, leading to nearly 8,000 arrests in just two months.
Mohammed further warned that the proliferation of fake number plates hampers security agencies’ ability to track and identify vehicles involved in criminal activities, making it a significant national security issue.
Acknowledging the National Assembly’s support for road safety initiatives, the Corps Marshal urged lawmakers to enhance existing regulations to ensure offenders are held accountable.
He also encouraged motorists to obtain genuine number plates and report any cases of fake registrations to the nearest FRSC office.
In response, Hon. Abiodun Adesida, Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to supporting the agency’s efforts, describing the crackdown as a crucial step toward improving road safety and security.
