Dr. Folakemi Cole-Adeife, a consultant dermatologist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), has cautioned against the frequent use of sponges during bathing, citing potential damage to the skin.
According to NAN, In a recent interview in Lagos, Dr. Cole-Adeife explained that using a sponge too often can strip the skin of its natural oils, create tiny tears, and increase the risk of introducing bacteria and other microorganisms.
“Frequent scrubbing with a sponge can cause micro-tears in the skin and strip it of essential natural oils. This can lead to irritation, itching, and even infections. If you experience itchy skin, try avoiding the use of a sponge for a while and observe any changes,” she suggested.
The dermatologist highlighted that the skin has a natural exfoliation process, making daily sponge use unnecessary for most people.
“Although many people feel the need to use a sponge every time they bathe, it’s not essential. Your skin naturally exfoliates itself, so scrubbing with a sponge daily is not required. If you must exfoliate mechanically with a sponge, it’s best to do so sparingly,” she explained.
For individuals who feel unclean without using a sponge, Dr. Cole-Adeife recommended limiting its use to once or twice a week, or at most three times.
“In Nigeria, there’s a common belief that you haven’t truly bathed unless you scrub thoroughly with a sponge. However, this practice is unnecessary on a daily basis. If you can’t forgo the sponge entirely, restrict its use to a few times per week,” she advised.
Her remarks aim to encourage healthier bathing habits and reduce the risk of skin damage associated with excessive scrubbing.
