A helicopter involved in efforts to combat South Korea’s raging wildfires crashed on Wednesday, resulting in the death of the pilot, according to fire officials.
The aircraft went down in a mountainous area of Uiseong County while working to control the spreading flames.
“We received a report about a helicopter crash during a wildfire operation. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, was found dead at the scene,” an official from the Gyeongbuk Fire Service confirmed.
The incident occurred as South Korea faces one of its worst wildfire crises in history, with at least 18 fatalities recorded so far.
Acting President Han Duck-soo described the destruction as “unprecedented,” as fires continue to devastate multiple regions.
Efforts to contain the blazes have been hampered by strong winds and dry conditions, making aerial firefighting operations challenging. Vast areas of land have already been scorched, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes.
Authorities have elevated the crisis alert to its highest level as emergency teams work tirelessly to prevent further damage.
Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the helicopter crash as officials continue to battle the wildfires.
