Finland freezes Simon Ekpa’s assets amid terrorism allegations

Simon Ekpa, a self-styled Biafran activist, is facing intensified legal challenges as Finnish authorities freeze his assets over alleged terrorism-related activities.

A report by Yle, a Finnish news outlet, revealed that the assets of companies linked to Ekpa and four of his associates—who are also in custody—have been seized. Ekpa is currently detained in Kylmäkoski Prison, a high-security facility established in January 1993 and known as one of the toughest prisons globally.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) arrested Ekpa on November 21 alongside four other individuals, accusing him of spreading terrorist propaganda on social media. A district court in Päijät-Häme subsequently ordered his remand, citing his involvement in alleged terrorist offences committed in 2021 in the Lahti municipality.

Ekpa, who claims to be the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, has been accused of instigating violence and inciting terror in Nigeria’s South-East through his online platforms. His activities have reportedly fueled the Sit-At-Home directives, which have crippled economic activities across the region.

Calls for Ekpa’s arrest have grown louder, with critics holding him responsible for escalating insecurity in the South-East. Finnish authorities have declared that his charges are non-bailable, and his trial is scheduled to commence in May 2025.
