The Federal Government, through the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) under its special public works department, has shortlisted 50 artisans for enrolment as interns in top indigenous and multinational construction companies.
This was announced at the flag-off and orientation ceremony of Artisans in Collaborative Construction Employment Scheme (Acces), a newly introduced scheme under the Special Public Works department (SPW) of NDE on Monday.
Director-General of the NDE Mallam Nuhu Fikpo said the scheme was to increase the capacity of artisans through a partnership with indigenous and multinational construction companies.
Represented by Lagos NDE Coordinator Mrs Serena Edward, Fikpo said that initiative was aimed at reducing unemployment and capacity deficiency among artisans.
The NDE boss pointed out artisans make up a larger percentage of labour force and contribute directly and indirectly to the growth and development of the economy.
He said they must be upgraded from time to time for better performance in the ever-demanding labour market.
He assured that interns generated from the three-month training would get monthly stipends and possible retention by host companies if they distinguish themselves
