The Federal Government has revealed plans to clear 500 hectares of land in Benue State to boost ranching and dairy production.
Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, announced this during his visit to the Benue Livestock Investigation and Breeding Centre in Raav, located in Gwer East Local Government Area.
Although the centre covers 2,400 hectares and is well-equipped to support both ranching and dairy operations, the initial phase will focus on clearing 500 hectares to establish pastures ahead of the rainy season.
Maiha expressed concern over the facility’s current condition, noting that it currently accommodates only 37 animals despite its large expanse. To address this, a dedicated committee will be formed to develop a comprehensive plan for revitalizing the centre. The proposals include launching dairy and ranching ventures as well as building critical infrastructure such as animal pens, isolation areas, maternity units, and staff housing.
Additionally, the centre is expected to partner with Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University in Makurdi for collaborative research efforts.
During the visit, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe, Director-General of the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, underscored that the project aligns with the state government’s strategy of using ranching to improve security and stimulate economic growth. He also highlighted that enhancing the livestock sector could facilitate the return of displaced farmers to their communities.
Dr. Asambe commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for his unwavering support of livestock development initiatives in the state.
