The Federal Government has stopped construction on the 12-kilometre Sagamu-Iperu Road near the Sagamu Interchange along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
This decision was taken after the Minister of Works, David Umahi, visited the project sites in Lagos and Ogun states on Thursday to check the progress.
During the visit, Umahi was not pleased with the quality of work done so far or the speed at which the project was moving.
As a result, the contractor has been given seven days to fix the problems and remove the current stone base being used.
Umahi also told the contractor to use the right milling machine and the proper stone base mixture to improve the work.
The minister added that while the contractor had finished the ramps and retaining walls on some bridges, there were serious concerns because some of the bridge piers showed signs of rusting rods.
He explained that fixing these issues quickly was very important because if any of the bridges were to collapse, it would cost the country billions of naira to rebuild.
However, if repairs are made now, the cost will be much lower.
Umahi said a design head would remain on-site to help the contractor work through the weekend and prepare complete drawings and cost estimates.
These will be submitted to the president for quick approval so the necessary repairs can begin without delay.
