The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), has issued a stern warning to states and communities along the River Niger, urging them to brace for potential flooding as water levels continue to rise.
This alarming development, as of August 22, 2024, follows reports from the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, highlighting the impact of upstream activities in Niger and Mali.
In a statement released on Friday, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, cautioned, “Floodwaters from these two countries are expected to steadily flow into Nigeria, particularly through Kebbi State.”
The agency further stressed that dam operators at Kainji and Jebba on the River Niger have been notified and are on high alert to manage any arising situation.
“As of August 22, 2024, the dams are not spilling water from their reservoirs,” Mohammed reassured.
NIHSA has urgently advised states and communities along the River Niger to remain vigilant as the floodwaters are anticipated to peak towards the end of August and into September.
The agency has pledged to keep a close watch on the evolving flood situation and provide regular updates to the public.
