The Federal Government has officially announced the opening of applications for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme, offering Nigerian postgraduate students the chance to study in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.
This announcement was made via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Dada Olusegun, the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, on Monday.
“FG has announced the commencement of applications for 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarships overseas,” the post stated.
According to information available on the scholarship board’s website, the scheme is designed for MSc and PhD candidates in fields pertinent to the oil and gas sector. It offers a comprehensive package that includes tuition, return flight tickets, accommodation, living allowances, health insurance, and bench fees where applicable.
The PTDF emphasized that “the 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships provide access to world-class training, research facilities, and global expertise while developing indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.”
For PhD candidates in the United Kingdom, the scholarships will follow a split-site arrangement, enabling research to be conducted at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), as well as at selected UK partner universities such as Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, and University of Portsmouth.
The agency noted the competitive nature of these scholarships, stating, “Only candidates who demonstrate outstanding merit and suitability will be considered.” Evaluation criteria will include academic credentials, research proposals, membership in professional bodies, and the relevance of their studies to the oil and gas industry.
MSc applicants are required to possess a minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree (or 2.1), have completed the NYSC programme, be computer literate, and hold five O’Level credits including English Language and Mathematics. PhD applicants must submit a research proposal of up to five pages outlining their objectives, methodology, and data collection methods.
The PTDF also stressed the importance of verification, stating, “All applicants must ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified prior to application, and multiple applications or submission of falsified documents will result in automatic disqualification.”
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply online at scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng for approved programs at PTDF partner institutions. The deadline for applications is set for February 27.
