The Federal Government has finally delivered on its 31-year-old promise by giving houses to members of Nigeria’s 1994 Super Eagles team.
The promise was made after the team won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia but remained unfulfilled for decades.
On Wednesday, the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development announced the completion of the housing allocation.
The ministry confirmed that letters have been handed to the players, with one of the recipients being former Super Eagles striker, Efan Ekoku.
Since he could not attend the event, his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, received the letter on his behalf during a brief handover in Abuja.
The Director of Public Building and Housing Development, Pemi Temitope, presented the documents in place of the Minister.
According to the ministry, the gesture shows appreciation for the players’ efforts in bringing pride to the country during the 1994 tournament.
Although the housing reward was promised three decades ago, action toward fulfilling it only began in 2022 after former President Muhammadu Buhari gave approval for its implementation.
That decision cleared the path for the current allocations to be made.
