The Federal Government has temporarily suspended operations at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu to allow for urgent runway repairs.
This was disclosed on Saturday by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Obiageli Orah.
According to Orah, a serious rupture was discovered on a key section of the runway, prompting immediate action.
“The damage is significant and requires emergency repair work, which will be carried out from April 22 to May 6, 2025,” she stated.
She explained that the closure was carried out in accordance with civil aviation regulations and is part of FAAN’s safety measures for air travel.
“To protect passengers and maintain safe airport operations, the runway will remain closed to flights during the repair period,” Orah added.
She appealed to air travelers and stakeholders for patience and cooperation, assuring them that all flights will be diverted to nearby airports while work is ongoing.
“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused by this sudden closure, and we ask for the understanding of all affected parties,” she said.
Meanwhile, Air Peace, a leading Nigerian airline, earlier announced it had suspended all its flights to the Enugu airport.
The airline cited deteriorating infrastructure at the facility, which it said had raised serious safety concerns.
