FG announces payment of another wage award arrears to workers

The Federal Government has released the second tranche of the N35,000 wage award arrears to federal workers, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) confirmed on Friday.

In a statement issued in Abuja by its spokesperson, Bawa Mokwa, the OAGF explained that the government had earlier paid one month out of the five months of outstanding arrears. With the latest payment, three tranches remain to fully offset the wage award backlog.

The office dismissed speculations that the government had abandoned the payment, assuring that the wage award arrears would continue to be settled in monthly installments of N35,000 until completion.

The N35,000 wage award, introduced to cushion the impact of economic hardship on public servants, has been a point of contention between the Federal Government and labour unions. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) had earlier criticized the staggered payment approach, insisting on a faster settlement plan.

The government maintained, however, that it remains committed to honouring its obligations to workers while managing available resources.
