The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a ban on the use of firecrackers and fireworks ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations to ensure public safety.
In a statement released on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, explained that the prohibition is designed to protect lives, property, and maintain public order during the festive period.
According to Adeh, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, emphasised that firecrackers often create unnecessary panic and anxiety in communities. He also highlighted the potential dangers, including the risk of fires and other accidents.
The police further warned that anyone caught selling or using fireworks will face arrest and legal action.
SP Adeh called on community leaders and residents to raise awareness about the dangers of firecrackers and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities or violations using the emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08061581938, and 07057337653.
