A Magistrate Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of a farm worker, John Odah, for allegedly killing his employer’s husband with a machete.
Odah was arrested by the Ondo State Police Command in connection with the incident, which took place on April 18, 2025, at Agbajo Farm in the Ilu-Abo area of Akure North Local Government.
Investigations by the police revealed that the deceased had rejected an offer of Indian hemp from Odah, which led to a heated argument. The altercation escalated, and Odah reportedly attacked the victim, Sunday Innocent, with a machete, inflicting fatal injuries.
The suspect was charged with murder, and during court proceedings, the prosecutor, Inspector Nelson Akintimehin, stated that Odah struck Innocent with a machete, causing severe injuries to his forehead and back, which led to his death.
The charge against Odah reads in part: “That you, John Odah, on April 18, 2025, at about 2 p.m., at Agbajo Farm via Ilu-Abo in the Akure Magisterial District, did unlawfully machete one Sunday Innocent on the forehead and back, causing his death.”
The charge contravenes Sections 319(1) and 320(1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006.
Though Odah was arraigned, the court did not take his plea. The prosecutor then requested that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility while awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
Magistrate O. Omotosho granted the request and ordered Odah’s remand. She also directed the prosecution to submit the case file to the DPP for further action.
The case has been adjourned to May 30, 2025, for mention.
