A man who pretended to work with Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has been arrested in Abuja for allegedly trying to scam job seekers by faking his connection to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
The suspect, Okoli Okana Boniface, was caught on June 16, 2025, after he was accused of manipulating the Customs recruitment process.
He claimed to be an aide to the First Lady to convince people he could help them secure jobs with the NCS.
At a press briefing held at the NCS headquarters in Abuja on Friday, the National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, said the suspect’s actions were investigated by the Customs Police Unit and found to be a deliberate move to take advantage of desperate job seekers.
The Customs Service said it has been facing an increase in online scams where fake accounts use the names and pictures of Customs officials and even retired officers to trick people with false job or auction offers.
The NCS made it clear that it does not conduct recruitment or auction processes through social media.
It warned the public to avoid messages from unknown sources and to always use verified channels for information about job or auction offers.
Authorities have vowed to go after anyone using false information to damage the image of the Service or cheat Nigerians looking for genuine opportunities.
