I’m An explosion has occurred at a Rain Oil Filling Station on the Ogbomoso/Ilorin Old Road in the Ogbomoso North Local Government Area of Oyo State.
In a separate incident, a devastating fire has engulfed a church in the Afijio Local Government Area of the state.
This information was conveyed in a statement released by Morrof Akinwande, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Fire Services Agency, in Ibadan, the state capital, on Thursday.
Akinwande reported, “On Wednesday, January 21, at precisely 19:30 hours, we received a distress call regarding an explosion at the Rain Oil Filling Station along the Ogbomoso/Ilorin Old Road from Mr Samuel.”
He added, “Personnel led by Oluwaleye (PFS) were quickly mobilised to respond to the distress call. Upon arrival, we found a shattered workshop, cracked walls, and damaged roofing sheets.”
The team immediately took action, employing their technical expertise to secure the area against potential vehicular and human hazards. All necessary safety precautions were implemented to prevent further explosions, and an investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently underway.
Akinwande emphasised that no injuries were reported as a result of the explosion and urged the public to remain vigilant regarding their activities, particularly concerning the storage of explosive materials.
Regarding the fire incident in Afijio, Akinwande noted that a distress call was received at 13:16 hours on Thursday, January 22, from Babalola Bamidele, who reported that a church behind Banikol Hotel on Oonireke Street, Ilora, was ablaze.
He stated, “Officers from the agency, led by PFS II Makinde, promptly responded and were deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, the church was fully engulfed in flames and heavily smoke-logged. The fire crew quickly took action, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and properties. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded.”
Akinwande indicated that the fire was caused by sparks from electrical appliances that ignited combustible materials in the vicinity, resulting in the blaze.
He underscored the importance of installing fire extinguishers in every building to mitigate the risk of fire incidents at their inception.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a fire that razed a one-storey commercial building housing computer and accessories dealers on Somoye Osundairo Street, Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos, which occurred just a day prior. The fire resulted in the destruction of goods worth millions of naira.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency reported that the incident was logged at approximately 01:55 hours through its 767/112 toll-free emergency lines.
