Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has released 11 inmates from different correctional centres across the state as part of efforts to reduce overcrowding and give the freed individuals a second chance.
The decision was made under the powers granted to the governor by Section 212 of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
It also followed recommendations from the Enugu State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, which includes representatives from the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Carmelite Prisoners Interest Organisation (CAPIO), and the Catholic Institute for Development, Justice and Peace (CIDJAP).
The inmates were officially handed over to the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kingsley Udeh, by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Victor Udeh.
Those who benefited from the governor’s pardon include Ugochukwu Oma, Onah Nnamdi, Chiadikobi Onu, Emmanuel Sambo, Emeka Nyia, Ngene Oluebube, Francis Chinecherem, Eze Chigozie, Anthony Tombari, Francis Chibuzor, and Uzoma Nnaoche.
According to the government, these individuals had shown positive behavioural change and were deemed ready to return and contribute to society, having acquired new skills during their time in custody.
The release was aimed at supporting their full reintegration and reducing pressure on the prison system.
