Enugu Electricity Commission Orders Disco to Refund 20,000 Customers

By Charles Maduka

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission has mandated MainPower Electricity Distribution Company to refund over 20,000 customers who were overbilled in April 2025.

The directive came after a thorough investigation revealed significant violations of estimated billing regulations by the company. The order, signed by the commission’s chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, and the Commissioner for Market Operations, Reuben Okoye, was announced on Monday.

“The commission has issued an Order to MainPower to refund the affected customers the overbilled units for energy consumed in April 2025,” the statement read.

The EERC disclosed that the list of overbilled customers is available on its website, and that MainPower has until the July 2025 billing cycle to complete all refunds. Failure to comply will result in a daily fine of N500,000 in line with the Enugu State Electricity Law of 2023.

The commission revealed that it had been monitoring MainPower’s billing practices since October 2024, issuing several warnings which the company failed to address adequately.

“MainPower’s violation rate rose from 24 percent in February and March to 34 percent in April 2025,” the EERC noted.

Affected customers who do not receive refunds by the stipulated deadline are advised to contact the commission through [email protected] or call 09122642755 for assistance.
