Emirates Airlines has announced that it will prohibit the use of power banks on all flights starting October 1, 2025, as part of new safety measures to curb lithium battery-related risks onboard.
In a statement on Friday, the Dubai-based carrier explained that the decision follows a comprehensive safety review, citing the increasing number of fire incidents linked to lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries in the aviation industry.
Under the new policy, passengers will still be allowed to carry one power bank rated under 100 watt-hours in the cabin, but its use will be strictly prohibited during flights. This includes charging devices from the power bank or charging the power bank itself using the aircraft’s power supply.
“All power banks must have their capacity rating clearly indicated and must be stored either in the seat pocket or in a bag under the seat in front of the passenger. They cannot be stored in overhead compartments or checked luggage,” the statement read.
Emirates stressed that the move is aimed at improving safety and ensuring cabin crew can respond quickly in the event of a battery-related emergency.
“Power banks, if damaged or overcharged, can experience thermal runaway—a dangerous chain reaction that may cause fires, explosions, or the release of toxic gases,” the airline warned.
The carrier reiterated that safety remains a “core value” in its operations and said it would continue to enhance measures to protect passengers and crew.
