An unidentified electrician was electrocuted on Wednesday while attempting to fix a high-tension power cable in Eruwa, located in Ibarapa East Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident occurred in the Odi Babaode area, where the victim was reportedly working on a 33KV power line without disconnecting the electricity supply.
The General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Canon Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Friday. He explained that the deceased was working on a live power line owned by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company when the fatal accident occurred.
“The technician was electrocuted while trying to resolve an electrical issue without shutting down the power source,” Akinyinka said.
According to him, the fire service received a distress call from one Adelanre Adeyinka at around 3:29 p.m. on the day of the incident. A response team, led by Peluola Babatunde, was immediately dispatched, but the victim was already deceased by the time they arrived.
The body of the deceased was later handed over to police officers from the Eruwa Police Division.
Akinyinka used the opportunity to highlight the critical need for proper safety procedures in electrical work, urging that only trained and certified professionals should handle live power lines.
“Life has no duplicate. Handling live electrical systems should only be done by skilled and certified experts,” he cautioned.
