The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State proceeded with its local government and state congresses on Wednesday, defying an interim injunction issued by a High Court in Ado Ekiti earlier that same day.
Justice E. B. Omotosho of the Ekiti State High Court granted the restraining order in response to an ex parte application filed by a party member, Afolabi Adedeji, in suit number HAD/424M/2025. The judge scheduled the next hearing for May 14, 2025.
The lawsuit names the PDP, Acting National Chairman Umar Damagun, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, the state’s Caretaker Chairman Dare Adeleke, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants.
Adedeji is seeking to prevent the PDP from accepting any delegate list not made up of individuals who properly participated in the ward congresses held on March 15, 2025.
He also requested the court to serve documents on the respondents via substituted means, including WhatsApp and physical posting at the party’s state office on Ajilosun Street, Ado Ekiti.
Justice Omotosho granted the requests and instructed all parties to preserve the existing conditions until the court hears the motion on notice.
In contrast to the court order, the PDP’s caretaker leadership in the state reported that the congresses were peaceful and successful.
In a statement, Caretaker Chairman Dare Adeleke thanked the party’s National Working Committee, INEC, and security agencies for their support.
He commended the Electoral Panel led by Dr. Eddy Olafeso for its efficiency, noting that the congress began as early as 8 a.m. and concluded before noon without incident.
“This smooth exercise reflects the careful planning and discipline of everyone involved,” Adeleke added.
