Ekiti Monarch Dissolves Sharia Panel Amidst Community Tension

The Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, has dissolved the Sharia panel at the Central Mosque, Ado Ekiti, to maintain peace and order.

The decision followed concerns about the panel’s activities and its potential impact on communal harmony.

The monarch convened a meeting with community leaders, the Chief Imam, and other stakeholders to address the issue.

During the meeting, it was clarified that the panel was an internal initiative meant to resolve disputes, including inheritance matters, within the Muslim community, Punch reports.

However, Oba Adejugbe directed that the panel be disbanded, emphasizing the traditional ways of handling disputes in the mosque should continue.

The state government also reaffirmed that Ekiti’s legal framework does not recognize Sharia courts or panels, stating that existing courts already handle religious and customary disputes effectively.

The Chief Imam, Sheik Jamiu Kewulere, confirmed the panel’s dissolution and assured that its intent was peaceful.

Both parties emphasized maintaining the cordial relationships that exist among different religious groups in the state.
