The Ekiti State Government, under the leadership of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, is establishing storage facilities to address food scarcity and minimise wastage of agricultural produce.
The initiative, aimed at ensuring a stable food supply and maintaining consistent prices throughout the year, was disclosed by the governor during an inspection visit in Ado Ekiti.
Governor Oyebanji noted that more than 6,000 hectares of farmland were cultivated across the state in 2024. However, the lack of adequate storage for harvested crops has necessitated this development.
The storage facilities will allow the government to purchase surplus produce during harvest periods and release it during times of scarcity, according to a report by Punch.
This move aligns with the federal directive to prioritise food security. It also bolsters the state’s agriculture programme, which empowers youth farmers by preserving their produce and facilitating its sale.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, emphasised that the project aims to combat hunger while simultaneously creating opportunities in the agricultural sector for young people in Ekiti State.
