The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), in connection with an ongoing investigation into financial misconduct totaling N4 billion.
Yusuf was reportedly arrested on Wednesday at his residence in Abuja around 4:30 p.m. by EFCC operatives.
The arrest is linked to allegations that Yusuf inflated the NHIS ICT budget from N4.975 billion to N8.7 billion, as well as authorized payments exceeding his approved financial limits.
Sources close to the investigation confirmed that Yusuf is currently being questioned at the EFCC office.
Investigative documents reviewed by Premium Times reveal additional allegations that Yusuf awarded contracts to family members, including a deal granted to Lubekh Nigeria Limited, a company where his nephew, Khalifa Hassan Yusufu, serves as a director.
Yusuf is also under scrutiny for abuse of office, with accusations that he approved contracts without due process and awarded projects to companies lacking the necessary qualifications.
The probe into Yusuf’s actions stems from a petition filed on October 31, 2018, by Attahiru Ibrahim, which accused him of fraudulent activities during his time as NHIS head.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrest and stated that Yusuf is set to appear in court on Thursday.
