Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has suspended 87 senior government officials for failing to attend a key state-organized function held on Monday.
The suspended officials include 25 commissioners, 14 senior special assistants, 24 special assistants, and 22 permanent secretaries. The action was announced in a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor.
According to the statement, the officials have been placed on a one-month working suspension without salary and are barred from endorsing or signing any official documents during the period.
“The governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has directed that the underlisted government functionaries proceed on one-month working suspension without salary for failure to attend an important government function,” the statement read in part.
Commissioners affected by the suspension have been directed to immediately hand over responsibilities to their respective permanent secretaries.
Some of the notable names on the suspension list include Stanley Lebechi Mbam, Prof. Leonard Uguru, Dr. Mathew Nwobashi, Prof. Nwogo Obasi, Ikeuwa Omebe, Chief Sunday Inyima, and Stanley Ogbuewu.
The state government emphasized that the move was part of Governor Nwifuru’s broader efforts to entrench discipline and accountability across all tiers of public service.
“The governor is determined to ensure that all government officials uphold the highest standards of conduct in the discharge of their duties and in service to the people of Ebonyi State,” the CPS added.
At the time of filing this report, none of the suspended officials had issued a public response.
