The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Tosin Adeola Ajayi, met with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday night to brief him on the current security situation across the country.
The meeting, which was held behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, was confirmed by Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga. Although details of the briefing were not made public, Onanuga said the DSS boss presented a comprehensive assessment of ongoing security challenges and the measures being taken to address them.
According to him, the engagement is part of the administration’s routine consultations with security chiefs as the government intensifies efforts to combat banditry, terrorism, communal clashes, and other emerging threats nationwide.
The DSS, Nigeria’s lead domestic intelligence agency, regularly updates the presidency, especially during periods of heightened tension or major security operations.
Friday’s meeting comes amid renewed public concern over attacks in several states and increasing calls for stronger federal intervention.
Earlier, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, acknowledged the rising spate of killings while speaking on Channels Television. He said the government is not denying the severity of the situation but is taking significant steps to restore stability.
“Yes, we have people being killed. The government is not shying away or denying this,” Idris said, attributing some incidents to religious tensions, economic hardship, and persistent communal clashes, especially in the Middle Belt.
He emphasized that both Christians and Muslims are victims of extremist violence, dismissing claims of religious genocide.
The minister added that President Tinubu had already overhauled the security architecture, including replacing service chiefs, before the U.S. redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC).”
