Edo State has confirmed an outbreak of diphtheria, with two deaths recorded so far. The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, disclosed the situation during an emergency response meeting held in Benin City, the state capital.
Five cases have been confirmed at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, prompting concern from health authorities about the potential risks if the infection is not promptly addressed.
Describing the outbreak as “a serious cause for concern,” Dr. Oshiomhole outlined measures being implemented to contain the spread. These include deploying a rapid response team, enhancing coordination among health agencies, intensifying surveillance and contact tracing, increasing public awareness, and ensuring the availability of vaccines.
Residents have been urged to report symptoms early—such as sore throat, fever, or difficulty breathing—and to avoid close contact with those showing signs of illness.
The Edo State government reassured the public of its commitment to controlling the outbreak and encouraged citizens to remain calm while staying vigilant.
