The details of a crucial meeting held on Friday between Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the South-East have emerged.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who leads the PDP Special Reconciliation Committee, met with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, the party’s South-East leader, at the Enugu State Government House.
The meeting was aimed at addressing rising tensions and defections within the party ahead of upcoming elections.
Joining Saraki were former Governors Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa and Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe.
The group is tasked with resolving internal disputes and restoring peace within the PDP.
The discussions followed a recent decision by South-East PDP leaders to re-nominate Sunday Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary for the remaining term, a move that has caused friction and threats of withdrawal from the party by some members.
The leaders met in a closed-door session to find solutions that would help unify the party and prepare for a peaceful and successful national convention.
Governor Mbah was commended for his leadership in the region and for the progress made in Enugu State under PDP governance.
The reconciliation committee left the meeting with new ideas to help build a stronger PDP and expressed confidence that the challenges can be overcome with commitment from all involved.
The crisis within the PDP National Secretary’s office arose when Samuel Anyanwu, who had left to contest the Imo State governorship, returned to claim the position after losing the election, despite the South-East caucus backing Udeh-Okoye.
This dispute has threatened the party’s stability and made reconciliation efforts urgent.
Saraki expressed hope that the party will recover from the internal struggles and continue to lead the country in the future, noting that while the path ahead is difficult, there is a strong desire among party members to rebuild and move forward together.
