The discovery of a decomposing body near Aper Aka Stadium in Makurdi, Benue State, has sparked alarm among local residents, raising serious concerns about public health and safety.
As reported by Afripost, the body, located close to the Benue State Police Officers’ Mess and the Benue State Education Quality Assurance (BEQA) office, was reportedly left in the area over the weekend. By Tuesday morning, it had not been removed, with the decaying remains attracting flies and emitting a foul smell, creating a significant health hazard.
While most residents refrained from commenting, a government worker in the vicinity, speaking anonymously, suggested that the body had been dumped on Friday night.
“We found the corpse with blood on the stadium fence. The man’s body had been burned, and his hands were tied,” the source revealed. “By Sunday, the odor became unbearable, and it’s even worse today. If nothing is done by tomorrow, this area will be uninhabitable.”
CSP Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Benue Command, confirmed that the police were aware of the situation and had taken the necessary steps.
According to Anene, initial investigations suggest the deceased may have been a suspected thief who was caught during an attempted robbery. Witnesses reported seeing individuals struggle with him before he was fatally struck, while his accomplices fled the scene.
Anene also pointed out that the deceased’s attire indicated possible involvement in criminal activity. She reassured the public that relevant agencies had been notified to remove the body.
