Nigerian music star Davido has credited highlife legend Bright Chimezie as the inspiration behind his latest song titled “With You,” which features singer Omah Lay.
In a video call that went viral on social media, Davido told Chimezie that his classic track “Because of English” inspired the sound and message of the new song. The track appears on Davido’s recently released fifth studio album.
“The latest hit I just did with Omah Lay, I used inspiration from your song, ‘Because of English,’” Davido told the veteran artist. “I will tell them to play it for you. It’s trending everywhere, the whole world.”
Reacting to the conversation, Bright Chimezie posted a video on Instagram where he danced to “With You” and praised Davido and Omah Lay for honoring his music.
“You can see I am vibing to the song already. It’s a beautiful piece of work, very wonderful. I appreciate the fact that you said you picked the inspiration from this song I recorded many years ago,” he said.
Davido responded with deep respect, switching to the Igbo language to pay tribute to Chimezie. He wrote, “Ihe di ka gi akokwala m. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, Ezigbote Onye Egwu,” which means, “People like you inspire me. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, a true music legend.”
“With You,” produced by Tempoe, is a blend of highlife, Afrobeats, and funk. The song carries the rhythm and feeling of Nigeria’s musical golden age and reflects how today’s stars are building on the work of legends like Chimezie.
