Veteran Nigerian singer Daddy Showkey has responded to a recent directive by Niger State Governor Umar Bago, who ordered security forces to arrest individuals sporting dreadlocks. The controversial move has drawn significant backlash, with many questioning the rationale behind targeting a specific hairstyle.
The governor’s statement, captured in a now-viral video on X (formerly Twitter), saw him addressing security agencies and calling for action against what he described as “rascality” in the state capital, Minna. Bago’s remarks sparked immediate debate, particularly as he advocated for the arrest of people with dreadlocks.
In his response, Daddy Showkey, known for his own long dreadlocks, challenged the governor, questioning whether the presence of dreadlocks was truly the root cause of insecurity in the country. He also revealed that he had canceled his planned trip to Minna following the governor’s controversial statement.
The singer further criticized the governor, urging him to first cut his own beard before making such an order. Showkey’s remarks have added fuel to the ongoing debate about the governor’s stance on personal appearance and its connection to public order.
