Cultural Entertainer Slumps, Dies During Performance in Abia

What began as a festive gathering at the annual August Meeting in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of Abia State turned tragic on Monday, August 18, 2025, when a renowned entertainer, Mrs. Nwandinma Dickson, fondly called “Nwayi Garri,” slumped and died in the middle of her performance.

The 65-year-old, a native of Oza Umuebukwu in Nneji autonomous community, was billed to thrill guests with dance and drama at the high-profile event. Clad in her colourful costume, she moved cheerfully across canopies, exchanging pleasantries and entertaining attendees with her trademark theatrics.

Midway into her act, Mrs. Dickson stooped briefly before collapsing. At first, the cheering crowd mistook the fall as part of her performance, only to discover moments later that she was unresponsive.

She was immediately rushed to a hospital with the assistance of the Mayor of Ugwunagbo LGA, but doctors confirmed her dead on arrival.

Family members disclosed to ABN TV that the late entertainer had initially been hesitant to attend the meeting, but eventually decided to honour her commitment to perform.

The incident has thrown the Ugwunagbo community and beyond into mourning, with many describing Nwayi Garri as a vibrant woman who dedicated her life to promoting cultural heritage and community entertainment.

Community sources said they are awaiting an official report on the cause of her death, though some residents suspect it may have been related to blood pressure complications.

Mrs. Dickson is remembered as a cultural icon whose energy and artistry made her a beloved figure across Abia State.
