Clerics under the Concerned Igbo Ministers Commission have strongly criticized the Southeast governors for their role in the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
According to Politics Nigeria, in an open letter dated January 8, 2025, signed by the group’s President-General/International Coordinator, Tony Anthony, and Secretary-General, Tony Osuji, the clerics accused the governors of betraying the Igbo nation.
The letter claims that it is now evident that President Bola Tinubu and the Southeast governors made a deliberate effort to ensure that Kanu remains incarcerated. It referenced recent comments by Prince Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, who revealed a deal made before the 2023 elections involving Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son, with his father’s approval. According to the deal, Kanu’s release was to be contingent on Tinubu winning the presidency.
The clerics further blamed the Southeast governors for the rising insecurity in the region, stating that they should have pressured the President for Kanu’s release.
The letter urged religious leaders across the region to begin questioning the delay in Kanu’s release. The group condemned the continued detention of Kanu, describing it as a deep humiliation to the Igbo people.
